AI Share of Voice Calculator

Counting brand mentions in AI answers by hand is tedious. Paste an answer from ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or Google's AI Overviews, and this calculator counts the brand mentions for you and shows your share of voice. Start with your brand, a competitor or two and one answer. It's free, there's no sign-up, and nothing you paste leaves your browser.

[2] Calculator

Quick start: your brand, a competitor or two and one AI answer. That's it.

STEP 1

Who are you comparing?

Add your brand and one or two competitors, using the names customers would say.

STEP 2

Paste one AI answer

Ask an AI tool a question (a prompt) your customers would ask, then paste its answer below. One answer is enough to get started.

New to this? How to get and copy an AI answer
  1. Open the AI tool in a private window (Ctrl+Shift+N in Chrome, Cmd+Shift+N on a Mac) so your past chats don't affect the answer. For ChatGPT, go to chatgpt.com. For Google AI Overviews, go to google.com and type your question into the regular search box. The AI Overview is the summary at the top of the results. If Google opens a chat-style AI Mode page instead, that's a different tool.
  2. Start a new chat and ask one question, the way a customer would. Leave your brand name out. For example: “Who are the best bakeries for wedding cakes in Denver?” or “What's the best project management tool for small teams?”
  3. Copy the whole answer. In ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Copilot and Perplexity, click the Copy icon (two overlapping squares) under the answer. In Gemini, it may be inside the ⋮ menu. For a Google AI Overview, click and drag from the first word to the last, then press Ctrl+C (Cmd+C on a Mac). Don't use Ctrl+A, which selects the whole page.
  4. Pick the tool you used under “Where did this answer come from?”, then paste the answer into the box with Ctrl+V (Cmd+V on a Mac).
  5. Want a steadier number? Ask the same question again in a fresh chat, click “+ Add another answer” under the box, and paste the new answer.

You don't need the sources for quick start. If some links come along when you copy, that's fine. Leave them in.

Optional. Paste one answer, click this, then paste the next.

[3] How it works

The formula behind the number

AI share of voice = (your brand's mentions ÷ total mentions of all tracked brands) × 100

Citation share of voice = (citations of your website ÷ citations of all tracked websites) × 100

It's the same core formula Semrush uses for AI share of voice.

“All tracked brands” means you plus the competitors you entered. Mentions show who AI tools name. Citations show who they send people to: a citation is any time a brand's website appears in an answer, as a source or a link, including any page on it. Track specific pages, like a product or service page, to see exactly which of your pages AI tools rely on.

You can count mentions two ways. One per answer, the default, counts each brand once per answer no matter how often it's named, so one long or repetitive answer can't inflate the total. It's the standard for AI answers. Every mention counts each time a brand is named, so three mentions in one answer count as three. It's useful for social posts, threads and long-form content, where repeat mentions add visibility. Pick one method and stick with it, so your numbers stay comparable month to month. Web addresses in source lists are tracked separately as citations either way.

Look at the per-platform numbers, not just the blended one. A healthy overall share can hide a platform where you're invisible, and that platform is usually where the next round of work should go.

A few rules for clean numbers:

  • Leave out branded prompts. If a prompt includes your brand name, the AI will almost always mention you.
  • Run each prompt two or three times. AI answers vary from run to run, so more answers give a steadier number.
  • Keep conditions consistent. Use a fresh chat, the same prompts and the same competitors each month.

[4] Quick questions

Quick questions

What is AI share of voice?

AI share of voice is the percentage of brand mentions in AI-generated answers that belong to your brand, compared with the competitors you track. It shows how often ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews name you when people ask about your category.

How does the calculator count mentions?

You choose. One per answer, the default, counts each brand once per answer, so a single long or repetitive answer can't inflate a brand's share. Every mention counts each time a brand is named, which is useful for social posts and long-form content. Either way, it matches whole words, ignores capitalization, and also looks for any other names you list, like an app name or abbreviation. Web addresses, like yourbrand.com in a source list, count toward your citation rate instead of your mentions.

Is my data saved or shared?

No. The calculator runs entirely in your browser, and nothing you paste is sent anywhere. Your last session is saved only in this browser so you can pick up where you left off, and Clear all removes it.

How many prompts should I test?

One is enough to start. Paste a single answer and you'll see your share of voice right away. For a steadier number, ask the same question two or three times, in a fresh chat each time, since AI answers vary from run to run. Add a few more questions your customers would ask when you're ready, and keep the same questions and competitors each month so your numbers stay comparable.

What's the difference between mentions and citations?

A mention is when an AI answer names a brand. A citation is when it includes the brand's website as a source or link. Mention share of voice shows who AI tools talk about, and citation share of voice shows who they send people to. Mentions build awareness, while citations are what bring visitors to your site.

Can I track citations for a specific page?

Yes. List up to 10 pages, like a product page, service page or blog post, under Specific pages to track in the advanced options. The calculator shows how many answers cited each page on each platform. Pages are matched exactly, so citations of other pages on your site aren't counted toward them.
